The human resources field has taken the spotlight in the business world, evolving into much more than payroll, staffing, and attendance.  As the workforce changes, HR is changing right along with it in new and innovative ways. Here are some key trends we gathered from CAHR ‘19.

Performance Management

Performance management has long surpassed a yearly performance review.  Advancements in HR tools have enabled us to deliver feedback, praises, and performance reports on a regular basis.  A new term that has been introduced to the HR world is people enablement.  The term refers to the strategic use of human resources to enhance employee performance.  Instead of forcing the person to fit the job, perhaps the job can be adjusted to fit the person to achieve the highest level of performance.

Applying Artificial Intelligence

No surprise here as AI has been a hot topic for a while.  What we are starting to see now, is how it can be applied to HR in a palatable way.  Discussions at CAHR pushed past the idea of streamlining repetitive tasks. Instead, speakers dove into the proactive use of AI for hiring, identifying toxic behavior, and managing brand risk.

Soft Skills in the Workplace

Communication, the ability to listen, empathy , personal drive, critical thinking, and understanding are the core of soft skills. We are seeing more emphasis placed on the value of developing and exercising these skills at work, especially in leadership roles.  Soft skills tie directly in with emotional intelligence which can play a huge role in increasing personal and team effectiveness, improving employee engagement, and having a positive impact on an organization overall. An intriguing approach we witnessed at CAHR is the use of improv exercises to strengthen soft skills.
